Co-Founder and Guest Director of the Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra, and Associate Director of Hanover Band, Dutch/Australian conductor Benjamin Bayl was Organ Scholar of King’s College Cambridge, then studied conducting at London’s Royal Academy of Music, after which he served as Assistant Conductor to Iván Fischer at the Budapest Festival Orchestra and Konzerthausorchester Berlin. He was mentored by and assisted Gardiner, Harding, Hickox, Bicket and Bolton in many productions at the most important European theatres.
In the world of opera, he has conducted productions for Wiener Staatsoper, Dutch National Opera, Staatsoper Berlin, Royal Danish Opera, Opera Vlaanderen, Opera Australia, Opera de Oviedo, Budapest State Opera, Polish National Opera, Deutsche Oper am Rhein, NorrlandsOperan and Warsaw Chamber Opera.
Working extensively with period instruments, he directs Collegium Vocale Gent, Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, B’Rock, Concerto Copenhagen and Concerto Köln. In the symphonic world he has made debuts with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Orquesta Sinfónica de Asturias, Taipei Symphony Orchestra, Bochumer Symphoniker, Bremer Philharmoniker, Orchestra Haydn di Bolzano, Orchestra Filharmonica di Torino and the Scandinavian orchestras of Stavanger, Umeå, Gåvle, Aalborg, Aarhus, Odense & Sønderborg.
Future projects include Die Zauberflöte (Opera Zuid), Don Giovanni (NorrlandsOperan), Candide (Wiener Kammeroper) and concerts with the Hong Kong Philharmonic, Sinfonieorchester Aachen, Bochumer Symphoniker, Cartagena Festival, Wratislavia Cantans Festival, Australian National Academy of Music and a Beethoven cycle with The Hanover Band.
